In February 1985, the City and Borough of Juneau Assembly established an Ad Hoc Fisheries Development Committee for the purpose of obtaining community input regarding actions which could be taken to enhance and expand fisheries development in Juneau. The ad hoc committee completed its work and issed its report in April 1986.
The ad hoc committee was reformed upon the request of the Assembly to review the progress that had been made by the City and Borough on the goals identified by the committee in its original report. That committee reported that significant progress had been made on the goals, including a major expansion in the production of salmon by the local aquaculture industry, improved infrastructure to serve the commercial fishing fleet and the local processors, rehability of fish producing habitat within the City and Borough and new plans to better protect such habitat in the future, improved recreational fishing opportunities in salt and fresh water and other goals. They recommended the Assembly create a permanent advisory board on fisheries development and the Assembly created the Fisheries Development Committee (FDC) through Resolution 1399 adopted September 11, 1989.
An extensive project the FDC worked on was exploring the feasibitlity and options of a publicly owned refridgerated warehouse facility in CBJ. A result of this work was the March 3, 1998 Feasibility Analysis report by Norther Economics in association with MBA Consulting Engineers.
When Resolution 1399 created the FDC, it created a committee made up of nine public seats. From 2005-2007 there were at least two to seven of those seats vacant at any given time. On September 24, 2007 the Assembly adopted Resolution 2418, repealing Resolution 1399 and reducing the number of seats on the committee from nine to seven in the hopes that the committee would be better able to establish a quorum with which to hold meetings. From 2007 to 2009, only four of the seven seats were filled, the committee had not been holding regular meetings and three of those seats expiring as of January 31, 2009 and it looked like it would become inactive due to a lack of interest in membership.
Community members interested in the mission and work of the committee came forward to the Assembly Human Resources Committee in the spring of 2009 asking to revitalize the committee. The end result is the appointment by the Assembly of an entirely new membership for the committee with a rekindling of the goals and purpose of the committee.
The Fisheries Development Committee meeting dates are set at the close of each meeting. Typically, they try to meet the First Thursday of every month at 6:30p.m. in the Juneau Economic Development Council Boardroom (612 Willoughby). Current FDC Work on Public Cold Storage

On March 23, 2010 the FDC appeared before the Docks & Harbor’s Finance Committee to present a proposal seeking $25,000 in funding for feasibility study on a public cold storage facility. The Docks & Harbor’s Finance Committee agreed to move the question to the Docks & Harbor’s Board.

On March 25, 2010, the FDC appeared before the Docks & Harbor’s board to propose Docks & Harbor’s funding a feasibility study on a public cold storage facility. Specifically, the FDC sought the ability to return to the board with a proposed scope of work and more refined budget.
On April 5, 2010, the FDC approved moving forward with a proposed scope and timeline to the Docks & Harbor’s board to be developed by a subcommittee of the FDC.

On May 4, 2010, the FDC met to discuss the outcome from the Dock’s & Harbor’s meeting. The FDC recommended an intensive inquiry of support from the Juneau seafood processing community
FDC met June 2, 2010 to determine industry support for pursuing feasibility funds for a public cold storage. The FDC determined there was significant support from a bulk of the processing community to continue seeking funds.
