After receiving public comment from around 300 people, the Assembly on September 29 decided to pass an ordinance that extends our mitigation strategies until March 1 of next year. Some people have understood this to mean that the ordinance extends the mask mandate. That is not accurate. It’s summer in Juneau! It’s clear that independent travel has resumed given the number of maps in hands that you see downtown lately. The return of large cruise ships seems imminent. The 2021 Cruise Ship Calendar has been posted and we expect to see the first large ship in town on July 23. (more…)
When it comes to COVID-19, there is a lot to keep track of, from the global to the local to the personal. The City and Borough of Juneau wants to make it easier to stay informed on what’s happening on the community level. City Manager Rorie Watt and members of CBJ’s Emergency Operations Center will present weekly updates on the status of COVID-19 in Juneau every Tuesday at 4 p.m. After a brief presentation, a portion of the update will be devoted to questions from the community submitted ahead of time. Members of the press will also have an opportunity to ask questions.

The Assembly recently appointed a Visitor Industry Task Force to try and get some advice on how to proceed with the touchy issue of tourism grown. There are many valid community perspectives on cruise ship tourism and they range from reducing the current visitation (and maybe having a day a week with no ships) to embracing the growth and building new facilities to accommodate increased numbers. The Assembly Finance Committee is looking deeply at City and Borough of Juneau finances. Through presentations and interactive resources, CBJ staff is getting into the nuts and bolts of the budgeting process, as well as giving the committee a big picture overview of CBJ’s finances. The public is encouraged to follow along by attending the meetings or looking closely at the agenda packets.
