Juneau International Airport flights operating as usual

Flights are operating as usual at the Juneau International Airport.

For a brief period on Sunday, February 18, the back-up fire truck at the Juneau International Airport was down. FAA regulations require two trucks to be functional at all times for jet traffic to land. Airport mechanics quickly repaired the situation and flights resumed operating normally.

Airport Parking Limited as Long-Term Lot Closes for Summer Construction

Airport parking will be severely limited over the summer as construction takes place in all four parking lots. Passengers traveling through JIA this summer are strongly encouraged to catch a ride from family and friends or use ground transportation options like taxis, rideshares, and public transit.

The permanent Long-Term Parking Lot closes today, May 31. A temporary lot is open north of the terminal—look for detour signs on the right as you approach on Shell Simmons Drive. Parking in this lot is limited to a maximum of 14 days prepaid (pay at the kiosk before you fly), and overstays will be towed and impounded at the owner’s expense.

The Short-Term Parking Lot will be temporarily relocated during later stages of construction.

For more information about Juneau Airport parking improvements, see the JIA parking flyer or contact Pam Chapin at (907) 789-7821.

Major Improvements to Juneau International Airport Parking Coming in Summer 2023

Major improvements to the Juneau International Airport parking lots will take place during the summer of 2023. Work will affect all four lots—Long-Term, Short-Term, Rental Car and Employee—and will begin in May. Improvements include work on curbs, repaving, lighting and draining, as well as the implementation of a new payment system.

The Long-Term Lot will be temporarily relocated for the duration of construction and Short-Term, Taxi Staging, and Rental Car parking will be relocated for shorter periods at various times during construction.

During the busy summer season, the Airport anticipates parking will be very tight and at times all lots will be completely full. Passengers are encouraged to seek rides or use ground transportation options—taxis, rideshares, or public transit—whenever possible to ease parking congestion and ensure safe and smooth travel.

Long-Term Lot Construction

A temporary long-term parking area opened May 19 north of the terminal. Follow detour signs to the north of the terminal, on the ramp side (right side) approaching from Shell Simmons Drive. The permanent Long-Term Lot will close May 31. Travelers departing in May and returning after May 31 should park in the temporary lot.

Parking in the temporary long-term lot will be limited to a maximum of 14 days for the duration of construction. Overstay vehicles will be subject to tow and impound at the owner’s expense.

New Parking Payment System

Effective immediately, long-term airport parking payment will transition to a prepay system. Short-term parking payment will transition in June. Passengers will have the option of paying at kiosks located in the lots or via the REEF Mobile smartphone app. Download the app for Apple or Android or search for REEF Mobile in your smartphone’s app store.

Please note that under the prepay system, passengers must pay for parking before their stay in the lot—whether it is a short visit to the terminal or an overnight trip.

Short-Term Lot Construction

The Short-Term Lot is expected to remain unchanged until mid-June, when the existing payment system will be replaced. The short-term parking area will also be temporarily relocated for a short time during the later stages of construction. Please be alert for detour signs.

For more information, see the JIA parking flyer or contact Pam Chapin at (907) 789-7821.
